Elephant foot yam (Amorphophallus paeonifolius) is widely cultivated in India for its edible corms. During the survey of Estern U.P., leaves of elephant foot yam sowed mild to severe mosaic mottling symptoms. The causal virus was transmited through aphids (Myzus persicae Sulz. and Aphis gossypii Glov.) and also through corms but could not be transmitted by mechanical sap inoculation, dodder and grafting. It was restricted Amorphophallus only and could not produce any symptoms on hypersensitive or systemic hosts when inoclated mechanically in indicator plants of different families. In DAC-ELISA the causal virus reacted positively with mixed antiserum of poty and carla viruses. Electron micrographs taken by leaf dip method revealed flexuous virus particles measuring 760nm of poty and 610nm of carla viruses. Ultra violet light absorption spectrum of the purified virus showed minimum and maximum absorption at 245nm and 260nm indicated the presence of nucleoprotein. It gave positive reaction for RNA with orcinol test and negative for diphenylamine test.
