Seven important potato cultivars were sap inoculated with four isolates of PVY and another potyvirus from Datura stramonium during August 2003 and April 2004 to determine their response. Average maximum/minimum temperatures during mid August to mid-September 2003 and mid April to mid-May 2004, respectively were 23.2/16.0 and 21.4/14.5°C; range being 19–25/14.5 - 18 and 18.4 - 28.7/6.1–20.7. PVYo isolate from potato clone BD-29 either proved very mild or non-infecting during August - but moderately severe and virulent during April-. The PVYo isolate from Solanum chacoense was virulent yet induced milder symptoms during August - but severe symptoms during April-. During August, 2003, PVYo isolate from BD-29 infected only potato cv. Kufri Pukhraj while that from S. chacoense infected five cvs. viz. Kufri Jyoti, Kufri Bahar, Kufri Pukhraj, Kufri Sutlej and Kufri Ashoka. During April, 2004, both the isolates infected all the seven cvs. tested. On the other hand PVYN isolate from Physalis floridana only symptomlessly infected four potato cvs. during August and six cvs. during April; secondary infection of this in Kufri Jyoti caused systemic necrotic spots and necrosis during April. PVYC isolate from Petunia hybrida could not infect any cultivar while potyvirus from D. stramonium symptomlessly infected cvs. Kufri Bahar, Kufri Pukhraj and Kufri Sutlej only duirng August. Implications of the findings will be discussed.
