Abstract

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the most important fruit crop of the tropics. Although the total area udner cultivation has increased in the recent past, however, its production has been affected badly due to a numebr of viral diseases like papaya ring spot and leaf curl. papaya ring spot virus, transmitted through seeds, sap, dodder (Cascula reflexa Roxb.) and several aphid species, belongs to genus potyvirus wheeras leaf curl virus transmitted only through white fly (Bemisia tabaci Gen.), belongs to gemimivirus group. Ten cultivars were evaluated for host plant resistance against both the viruses for two consecutive years (2003 and 2004). The field experiments were laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. Observations on per cent disease incidence were recorded after 10 months of transplanting. Maximum incidence for PRSV disese was recorded 74.68 & 79.28 per cent in CO7 and for PL CV disease 15.13 & 16.27 per cent in ME-1 during 2003 and 2004, respectively. Whereas minimum ring spot and leaf curl virus disease incidence recorded were 27.32, 29.41 per cent in CO3 and 1.39 and 1.43 per cent in CO3 during 2003 and 2004, respectively.
