Abstract

Studies were undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of systemic resistance inducing protein of Clerodendrum aculeatum (CA-SRIP) for induction of resistance in Carica papaya. Production of CA-induced defense protein(s) in papaya plants was evaluated on three different hosts (Nicotiana tabacum cv Samsun NN, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, and Chenopodium amaranticolor) showing hypersensitive response to Tobacco mosaic virus, Sunnhemp rosette virus and Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV), respectively. Systemic symptom production, following challenge inoculation by PRSV, was not observed in CA-SRIP sprayed papaya plants where as control plants exhibited mosaic symptoms after 15 days and shoestring symptoms after 30 days of inoculation under glasshouse conditions. CA-treated plants were symptom less over a period of six months where as control set of plants showed continuous increase in severity of symptoms. These results were also evaluated on ELISA against antiserum of PRSV. ELISA absorbance value in CA-treatment was significantly lower than disease control. There was also a significant difference in the vegetative growth of treated plants as compared to control set of plants. These results may be useful in controlling PRSV in natural conditions.
