Abstract

Rose is an economically important crop of Iran and the world. A survey was conducted during the summer 2005 to identify viruses infecting Rosa species (R. damascene, R. indica and R. chinensis) in different growing plantations of Tehran province including Damavand, Public parks of Tehran and Karaj. A total of 210 samples from eight rose growing plantations with symptoms of mosaic, chlorosis and leaf malformations were collected. All samples were tested for the presence of Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PRNRSV), Arabis mosaic virus (ArMV) and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV subgroup II and I) with polyclonal antibodies using Double Antibody Sandwich Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (DAS-ELISA). Serological tests showed that PNRSV, ArMV were present in 16% (36 samples) and 8% (17 samples) of samples respectively. CMV was not detected among the tested samples. The presence of PNRSV and ArMV were verified in samples by mechanical inoculation of test plants. Immuno electron microscope (IEM) test were also performed for confirming. To our knowledge this is the first report of viruses infecting rose in Iran.
