Abstract

Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is vulnerable to several viral diseases. Mosaic diseases are endemic in Northern Telangana Zone of Andhra Pradesh and showed an average incidence of 18.47% during kharif 2000–01 to 2002–03 seasons. Of several field samples collected, 2123 were sap transmitted. The incidence of Cucumber mosaic virus was 35.61% followed by Potato virus Y (16.49%) and Pepper veinal mottle virus (15.17%). Based on biological and physical properties, three aphid borne viruses were identified. Under field conditions, of the four aphid species identified, Aphis gossypii was maximum in its percentage occurrence (58.10) followed by Myzus persicae (29.12), Aphis craccivora (8.89) and Rhopalosiphum maidis (4.70). Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae transmitted PVMV, PVY and CMV non-persistently with a transmission efficiency of 60–100% while A. craccivora transmitted PVY to the tune of 30%. The test viruses found to infect members of Solanaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Compositae, Leguminosae, Amaranthaceae, Aizoaceae and Apocyanaceae. Thermal inactivation point (TIP) of CMV, PVY, PVMV was between 60–70°C while dilution end point of CMV, PVY and PVMV fallen between 1:30000-1:40000; 1:1000-1:5000; 1:5000-1:10000 respectively. Longevity in vitro at room temperature (28–32°C) was 24 and 16 hours for CMV, PVMV and PVY respectively. Electron microscopy of negatively stained partially purified preparations of CMV, PVY and PVMV showed presence of spherical particles (28-30nm), flexuous rods (745–765´12nm), flexuous filaments (725–731´12nm) respectively. The present study would help further molecular characterization of the three viruses and facilitate for development of integrated management strategies.
