Abstract

Bud necrosis caused by Groundnut bud necrosis virus a member of the genus Tospovirus, is becoming a major problem in groundnut growing regions of the Punjab State as its early infections (30 – 40 days old plants) resulted in total crop failures in certain areas. Keeping in view widespread occurrence and higher incidence of the disease, fields trails were conducted to study the effect of date of sowing and efficacy of insecticidal sprays starting at different growth stages of plants for managing the disease. Two groundnut varieties M 522 and SG 99 were sown on four sowing dates viz. early May, end May, early June and end June. In another experiments different number of foliar sprays (Rogor @ 0.25%) were given up to 60-day-old crop starting from 20, 30 and 40 day old crop at 10 days interval. Percent disease incidence and severity were highest in case of end May sown crop which was followed by early May and early June sown crop. However, the incidence and severity were significantly low in end June sown crop. On the other hand, insecticidal sprays did not result in reduction of incidence/severity of the disease irrespective of the variety as compared to control. However, it can be concluded that the disease can be managed up to certain extent by delaying the date of sowing but no insecticidal spray should be done at any stage of the crop as it resulted in increased incidence and severity of the disease.
