Abstract

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) a very popular fruit in the tropics and a reliable and cheap source of vitamins. This crop is found severely affected worldwide by Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV), which causes heavy losses in yield and quality of fruits. So far no feasible measures are available to control this disease. Therefore keeping in view the high antiviral activity exhibited by a few substances of plant origin (Boerhaavia diffusa and Clerodendrum aculeatum) against many phytopathogenic viruses, experiments were conducted to manage the ring spot disease in papaya at seedling stage in Complete Randomize Design (C R D) with nine treatments and three replications. The most effective treatment found was seed treatment with aqueous root extract of B. diffusa (10%) followed by its three foliar sprays. It could reduce the disease incidence by 65.36%. It has been observed that other treatment combination like seed treatment with B. diffusa root extract followed by foliar sprays with of C. aculeatum leaf extract could reduce disease incidence by 60.78%, seed treatment with C. aculeatum leaf extract followed by foliar sprays with B. diffusa root extract (58.15%), seed treatment with C. aculeatum leaf extract followed by foliar sprays with C. aculeatum leaf extract (54.33%), foliar sprays alone with B. diffusa root extract (48.95%), only foliar sprays with C. aculeatum leaf extract (45.66%), only seed treatment with B. diffusa root extract (25.50%) and seed treatment with C. aculeatum leaf extract (13.75%). Whereas, in untreated control plots disease incidence was very high along with severe symptoms.
