A virus causing mosaic in pumpkin was found to be readily transmitted from pumpkin to pumpkin by mechanical means. The virus was transmissible by aphids but not through seeds. The virus was found to be transmissible in a non-persistent manner by aphid species, Myzus persicae and Aphis gossypii, but not by Dectinotus carthami and Brevicornae brasicae. Amongst the aphids, Myzus persicae was found to be most efficient vector. The virus was inactivated between 45 to 50°C and the dilution end-point was 10−3 to 10−4. The virus remained viable up to 48 h at room temperature. The virus had narrow host range and infected only 14 plant species belongs to family Cucubitiaceae and Chenopodiaceae. On the basis of symptomatology, host range, physical properties in crude sap and vector transmission the present virus is identified as Watermelom mosaic virus-1 (genus Potyvirus), which is presently called as Papaya ring spot virus (Type-W).
