Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is one of the most important vegetables grown throughout India both under summer and rainy season. Among the viral diseases, Okra yellow vein mosaic virus (OYVMV) and Okra leaf curl virus (OLCV) are serious diseases of okra, especially in rainy season. Both the diseases are caused by begomo viruses and transmitted by whitefly Bemisia tabaci. There is total yield loss if plants are affected at an early stage. To find out resistant sources against these diseases, twenty-nine varieties of okra were screened under field conditions during 2002 to 2004 rainy season. Among these ten varieties viz., Arka Abhey, Arka Anamika, OH-150, TC-17, P-7, NOH-147, NOL-101, NOH-15, ZCH-3002 and US-7109 were found resistant to OYVMV. However, rest of the entries showed susceptible reaction against OYVMV. Similarly, these varieties were screened against OLCV but none of the entries showed resistant reaction. The promising lines were also screened under artificial inoculation conditions in glasshouse. ELISA test was done to confirm the absence of OYVMV in the virus-inoculated plants not producing visual symptoms.
