Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) is ranked under list OIE ‘A’ disease. It is a highly contagious viral disease of pigs and wild boars. In spite of endemic nature of the disease, CSF has been less studied in India. Again, due to non-CPE producing nature of the CSFV not much study has been carried out in isolation and characterization of the virus. In the present study isolation of CSFV was done from naturally infected pigs. A total of 9 outbreaks of CSFV occurring in different states of Northeaster region of India were attended and 314 samples were collected. Samples were screened by ELISA and FAT and 46.8% were found positive for CSFV. A total of 26 positive samples comprising of tonsil (7), mesenteric lymph node (4), spleen (8), pancreas (1), kidney (1) and leukocytes (5) were processed for isolation in PK-15 cell line. CSFV could be isolated from 60.0% tissue samples and leukocytes. Maximum infected tonsil and leukocytes yielded virus in PK-15 cell culture.
