Interception of seed-transmitted viruses in cowpea and mungbean germplasm imported during 2003

Abstract

The quarantine processing of 117 germplasm accessions comprising 48 of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) from Eritrea (2), IITA, Nigeria (44) and USA (2) and 69 of mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek] from China (20), AVRDC, Taiwan (35) and USA (14) revealed the presence of Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and Tomato black ring virus (TBRV) in cowpea from IITA, Nigeria; Cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV) in cowpea from Eritrea and IITA, Nigeria; CABMV in mungbean from AVRDC, Taiwan and CMV in mungbean from China. Virological testing methods employed include visual inspection, growing-on test, electron microscopy and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Harvest from only virus-free plants was released to the indenters which eliminated the risk of introduction of exotic seed-transmitted viruses or its strains.
