Abstract

Outbreaks of swine fever were investigated in two organized piggery units in Ambala and Hisar districts of Haryana state. Both the units were vaccinated using lapinised swine fever vaccine. The disease was characterized by high fever, drastic decrease in feed intake, purplish discolouration of the skin, swaying movements of the hindquarters and death. Enteritis, sub-capsular petechial hemorrhages in kidneys, and enlargement of the lymph nodes and spleen were the main findings on post- mortem examination. Classical swine fever virus was detected from spleen and lymph nodes using PCR and nested PCR with the primers from E2 gene regions. Overall morbidity rate, cumulative mortality and case fatality rate during this period were 54.9%, 36.6%, 66.6%, respectively.
