Abstract

Shrimp culture practices are widely followed in various maritime states of the country including Tamilnadu owing to its good export potential. Intensification of shrimp culture has resulted in the occurrence ofmany diseases. Viral diseases are a major threat to shrimp farming operations worldwide. As effective measures are not available for the control of viral diseases, it is essential to use a healthy and a diseases free shrimp seed for culture besides assessing the disease free status of the stock in the culture ponds following various diagnostic methods. A survey was undertaken with an objective to study the viral diseases of shrimp by histopathology and molecular tools. Shrimp samples were collected from various hatcheries and farms for the study. Various viral diseases viz., Whitespot, Syndrome virus (WSSV), Monodon baculo virus (MBV), Hepatonpancreatic Parvo virus (HPV), Infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHHNV), Yellow Head Virus (YHV) and Reo like virus could be diagnosed in shrimp samples based on the histopathology, electron microscopy, PCR and insitu hybridization.
