P-23. Resistance to BCMV and implications in breeding for resistance in Indian common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Abstract

Studies on resistance in some of the common bean genotype of diverse origin revealed the presence of effective sources of resistance against different strains of bean common mosaic potyvirus (BCMV). 22 accessions KR-225, KR-295, KR-7, KRC-16, KRC-11, KRC-7, KRC-13, KRC-12, KRC-4, KRC -22, Contender, Kentuky wonder, Premier, Hans, Kailash, Amanda, Great Northern UI 123, Sanilac, Monroe, Jubila, Improved Tender Green 40031 and Black Turtle Soup were found resistant to both the strain groups. Cv. Hans of Indian origin possessing resistance to all the four strains of BCMV prevalent in Himachal Pradesh used to study the inheritance of resistance against strain NL1n revealed that single dominant gene governed the resistance. So far only one dominant gene i.e. “I” has been reported to provide resistance against BCMV and BCMNV strains. The presence of this gene in cultivar Hans was confirmed using SCAR marker and implication in breeding for resistance in Indian beans will be discussed.
