Studies of interaction between viruses and mitochondria have shown that they can affect the mitochondria. Also linkage between human diseases and mitochondrial dysfunction has been revealed. In this study the effect of human influenza virus A (IVA) on total cell respiration (TCR) was investigated. In order to show that the cellular consumption of oxygen is mostly related to the mitochondria, antimycin A (AA) was used. The addition of AA to respiring MDCK cells completely blocked cellular respiration that means nearly all of the cellular consumption of oxygen is attributed to the mitochondria. Total cell respiration was measured using Clark-typed oxygen electrode. It was shown that following IVA infection of MDCK cells, TCR was significantly decreased.
