Faba bean necrotic yellows virus-FBNYV genus nanovirus causes severe yield losses and crop failures in food legumes in many West Asian and African countries. FBNYV has been previously reported in chickpea crop from several locations in Iran (Makkouk et al., Plant Pathology, 2002). During 2007–2008 growing seasons, broad bean field were surveyed in Mazandaran. Samples with mosaic, vienal yellowing, leaf rolling and severe distortion and wilting of shoot apex were collected and tested for the presence of FBNYV by Triple antibody sandwich-TAS-ELISA using polyclonal antibody 577 (diluted 1:400) and mix monoclonal antibodies also containing Mab.4F2 (dilution 1:200). All antibodies plus Rabbit Anti Mouse-RAM (1:500) kindly provided by Dr. Vetten BBA. Braunschwieg Germany. Samples with absorbance value higher than the mean value for non infected control plants plus three standard deviation were considered positive. To detect mix infection, The same samples were also analazed (Das Elisa) for other viruses that commonly infect Faba bean. Bean leaf roll virus -BLRV and Broad been wilt virus serotype-1-BBWV was also identified as mix infection. These viruses are already reported from broad bean. To our knowledge this is the first report of FBNYV infection of Faba bean in Mazandaran province of Iran. Further investigations on epidemiology host range, yield losses, molecular characterization and control management of the virus is needed.
