Abstract

Classical swine fever (CSF) is one of the most feared and devastating viral disease of pigs and it is considered as a major health problem of pigs in Assam, India. During April 2005–December 2007, a total of 22 CSF virus from pigs having CSF under field condition and pigs slaughtered for human consumption from different places of Assam were isolated in PK-15 cell line. The virus isolates were confirmed by sandwich ELISA, immunoperoxidase test (IPT) and RT-PCR. Out of the 22 isolates 15 isolates selected randomly from 6 districts of Assam and the cell culture adapted lapinized vaccine virus strain were phenotypically characterized by IPT using CSF virus specific E2 and Erns monoclonal antibodies (mabs). Except three isolates all the 12 field isolates reacted with more than one of the E2 specific monoclonal antibodies. Thirteen isolates reacted with more than one of the Erns specific monoclonal antibodies and the remaining two isolates reacted with only one Erns specific mabs. The reaction pattern of nine of the isolates is similar to that of the vaccine virus with E2 mabs. Similarly the reaction pattern of seven field isolates was similar to that of the vaccine virus with Erns mabs. Variation in the reaction pattern is possibly due to different antigenic epitopes of the field isolates which are detected by the mabs.
