Abstract

The objectives of the present study was to assess the clinical profile and outcome of hospitalized Dengue patients as well as to review the seasonal trends cases. Data regarding clinical profile of the patients were collected and analysed using SPSS 15.0 version. Study included 344 patients. Majority were males 216 (62.8%) and of 15–44 age group 194 (56.4%). Large number of cases was seen in 2007, 219 (63.7%) and in month of September 72 (21.1%). The commonest presentations were fever 341 (99.1%), followed by fever with chills 226 (65.7%), myalgia 186 (54.1%), vomiting 144 (41.9%), headache 109 (31.7%), pain abdomen 107 (31.1%), skin rash 33 (9.6%). Hemorrhagic manifestations were relatively uncommon 38 (11%), of which the most common being petechiae 21 (6.1%). The commonest clinical complications included Dengue with ARDS 20 (5.8%), B/L pleural effusion 12 (3.5%), Encephalopathy 7 (2%), and multiple organ failure 7 (2%). Among the study population of 344, 9 died (2.6%). The clinical presentation of Dengue is eclectic, ranging from fever to skin rash. There is a need for appropriate community based prevention program, as well as prompt detection and management of such cases at all levels of health care to reduce the complications due to the disease.
