Abstract

Liver is predemonantly affected in acute viral hepatitis, a systemic infection. Hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis D virus (HDV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are the common causative agents. All produce virtually the same clinico morphological pattern of acute hepatitis. Only specific viral markers can distinguish various catagories of acute viral hepatitis. In the present study conducted over aperiod of three years from july 2005 to june 2008, a total of 48,779 sera were processed for hepatitis A,B,C,D, and E viral markers. Viral ateology could be decided in 2013 (4.13%) cases. Hepatitis C had the highest prevalence of 37.11% followed hepatits B (29.01%), hepatitis E (20.86%) and hepatitis A (13.02%). No positive case was detected for hepatitis D. All kindes of viral hepatitis were found out to be more prevalent among males as compared to females.
