During surveys in and around Varanasi (Eastern U.P, India), widespread occurrence of an apparently mosaic disease of French bean was observed which is caused by Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV). The symptoms on naturally infected plants consist of severe mosaic, mottling and stunting of entire plant having few reduced pods. This BCMV altered the metabolites of French bean plants. The diseased plants had more concentration of phenolic acid, amino acid, nitrogen and protein contents then healthy ones. The chlorophyll content, reducing, nonreducing sugars and starch contents were found to be present in lesser quantities in infected plants in compared to healthy ones.
