Newcastle disease virus (NDV) infection is a zoonotic, highly contagious disease of poultry birds with high morbidity and mortality. The disease is usually prevented by vaccination of young birds with a live attenuated or an inactivated vaccine. The exact nature of protective immunity in NDV infection is not yet fully understood. The present study is an attempt to reveal the kinetics of immune response generated following infection of chickens with NDV. Two groups of birds were infected with either strain F1 or strain LaSota of NDV and monitored at weekly intervals for four weeks for the type of immune response either local, systemic, humoral or cellular response developed after infection with the virus. It was observed that following infection through oral and throughocular routes both local and systemic humoral antibodies were produced. Besides antibodies there was increased proliferative response of CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells. The implication of these observations is discussed.
