The study on prevalence and pathology of rabies inPunjab was undertaken on 196 cases wherein a total of 118cases were found positive for rabies in different animalsspecies using Seller's Staining, FAT, histopathologicalexamination and biological testing. The species-wiseprevalence of rabies in Punjab, India was found to behighest in buffaloes followed by dogs and cattle. Increasedincidence of rabies in dogs, buffaloes and cattle occurredin spring and monsoon seasons, which coincided withbreeding pattern of dogs. The young and male dogs werefound to be more prone to rabies virus exposure. Ascompared to rabid buffaloes, rabid cattle more commonlyrevealed hyper salivation and frequent micturation.Bellowing and difficult intake of food were found to bemore common in buffaloes than in cattle. Symptoms foundin rabid dogs were not reliable for clinical diagnosis ofrabies. In case of bovines, pathognomonic lesions (Negribodies) were commonly found in cerebellum. As comparedto cerebellum of rabid buffaloes, cerebellum of rabid cattleshowed more pathognomonic Negri bodies. Negri bodieswere more commonly present in hippocampus of rabiddogs. Neuronal necrosis and reactive inflammatorychanges were found more commonly in brainstem of dogs, buffaloes and cattle. Neuronal necrosis and reactiveinflammatory changes were found more commonly in rabiddogs than rabid bovines
