Abstract

Sequential haematological changes were studied in cattle and buffaloes following experimental infection of foot-and- mouth disease virus (FMDV) Asia 1 IND 8/79 by intradermolingual route. Both cattle and buffaloes inoculated with FMDV developed a transient mild leucopenia with lymphopenia. Reduced leucocyte count was observed at 1–2 DPI when tongue vesicles appeared and lasted 3 DPI in cattle and 5 DPI in buffaloes, when foot lesions appeared. Significant decrease in monocyte count in cattle, but an increase in buffaloes was observed following experimental infection. No significant changes were observed in the erythrocyte values in both cattle and buffaloes. It may be concluded that leucocyte changes caused by FMDV might play role in pathogenesis.
