Dr. J.L. Vegad Foundation

In recognition of the immense contributions made by Dr. Jawahar Lal Vegad in Veterinary Pathology, the IAVP established Dr. J.L. Vegad Foundation during 2005 with Dr. R. S. Chauhan as it founder president. In brief, biograpgy and major contributions of Dr. Vegad are given below:

Dr. Jawahar Lal Vegad was Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary Pathology at Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur, for 25 years and taught pathology for 37 years. He also held the position of Dean of Veterinary College between 1994 -1996. After retirement, he was Professor Emeritus of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for two years. Bom at Jabalpur on August 30,1936/he obtained BVSc with Gold Medal from Jabalpur in 1968, Associateship from IVRI in 1960, and Ph.D. in Veterinary Pathology from New Zealand in 1968 under the Commonwealth Scholarship. Dr. Vegad is well known for his’ pioneering contributions on sheep and chicken inflammation. He has distinction of publishing his first paper in Nature (London). Majority of his research papers has been published in New Zealand and British journals.

Dr. Vegad has guided several masters and doctoral students. Three of his Ph.D. students got the ’Jawaharlal Nehru Award’ of the ICAR, and he himself has the distinction of receiving the most prestigious ’Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Award’ of the ICAR, New Delhi, Government of India, in 1985, for his outstanding contributions on avian inflammation. As a scientist, Dr. Vegad enjoys an international reputation. In 1988–89, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Davis, USA. Apart from being on the Editorial Board and referee of several Indian journals, he was also on the Editorial Board of the reputed journal ’Comparative Haematology International (London)’ for 10 years, and has also contributed a chapter on buffalo haematology in the 5th edition (2000) of ’Schalm's Veterinary Haematology’, published from USA. Besides being honoured as the Best Teacher of Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Jabalpur, he is also recipient of the Fellowships of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences (1996), the Indian Association of Veterinary Pathologists (1999), and the Society for Immunology and Immunopathology (2004). On September 13,2001, Dr. Vegad was conferred with “Dr. CM. Singh Samman” at IVRI, Izatnagar, by “Dr. C.M. Singh Endowment Trust” for his lifetime contributions in Veterinay Pathology. In July 2004, he was elected as a Member of the Governing Council of the National Academy of Veterinary Sciences. Dr. Vegad is also author of three textbooks in Veterinary Pathology, which have been widely acclaimed by scientific and student communities. His 4th book ’Poultry Diseases- A Guide for Farmers and Poultry Professionals’ was published in January ‘2004. Dr Vegad was President of the Indian Association of Veterinary Pathologists for three cousecutive terms. In August 2004, he received “Dr. Nemi Chand Jain Lifetime Achievement Award” of the Indian Association of Veterinary Pathologists. At present, he is a Consultant with the Phoenix Group, a leading poultry hatchery of the country at Jabalpur, and has been looking after poultry health for past five years. The IAVP congratulates Dr. Vegad for his unique distinction and wishes him all the best in his life, and hope that he will continue to contribute towards our profession.

“Dr. J.L. Vegad Foundation” has been developing E-leaming, multimedia etc, for students and teachers of Veterinary Pathology, which will go a long way in raising the standards of veterinary pathology teaching in India.
