Cytopathology is an inexpensive, rapid and efficient tool for the diagnosis of canine superficial neoplasms, however, its application in veterinary practice in India has been limited. The present review deals with the incidence, bodily location, breed and sex predisposition of various canine superficial neoplasms and their cytopathological evaluation. An attempt has also been made to compare the correlation between cytopatological and histopathological findings as documented by various researchers. The sensitivity and specificity of cytopathological diagnosis has also been discussed. Cytopathology technique appears to be quite effective in diagnosis of most of the canine superficial neoplasms, particularly epithelial and round cell tumours.
