Amelioration of Dimethoate-induced toxicity by Morinda citrifolia in Wistar albino rats

Abstract

The investigation was carried out to explore the remedial potential of Morinda citrifolia in dimethoate-induced toxicity in rats. Thirty six Wistar albino male rats were divided in six groups. Group I, served as negative control group treated with distilled water only. Group II, served as positive control, which received dimethoate @ 31mg/Kg body wt. Group III was kept as standard which received Vitamin E @ 150 mg/Kg body wt. along with dimethoate @ 31 mg/Kg body wt. Group IV, V and VI were treated with Hydro-ethanolic extract of Morinda citrifolia @ 75, 150, 300 mg/Kg body wt., respectively along with dimethoate @ 31 mg/Kg body wt. Lipid per oxidation in liver and kidney was assessed by increased level of TBARS, lipidhydroperoxides, glutathione peroxidase, Super oxide dismutase, catalase. glutathione activity was decreased due to dimethoate toxicity. Hydroethanolic extract of Morinda citrifoliaat 300 mg/Kg body wt. dose decreased lipid peroxidation in both organs by improving the activities of antioxidant enzymes and decreasing the level of thio-barbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and lipid hydroperoxides. The glutathione content also improved in both the organs.Histopathological changes were observed in liver, kidney, testes and brain. It was concluded that hydroethanolic extract of M. citrifolia fruits significantly ameliorated the toxic effects produced by dimethoate in rats.
