Classification, grading and prognostic evaluation of canine mammary tumours

Mammary tumors are one of the most common malignant tumours in canines and considered as natural animal model of human breast cancer. Histopathological classification and other pathological details help in proper diagnosis and prognosis of these tumours. In the present study, 43 cases of canine mammary tumours (CMT) were examined (42 malignant and 1 benign). Malignant tumours (42) comprised of 33 carcinomas (78.57%), 2 sarcomas (4.76%), 6 carcinosarcomas (14.29%) and 1 mast cell tumour (2.38%). Most of CMT cases were of grade I and grade II category and the tumours with high grade showed less survival on the basis of Kaplan Meier analysis. Tumours containing thrombo-embolism, necrosis, and connective tissue invasion suggested bad prognosis.
