Abstract

Osteodystrophia fibrosa is a common metabolic condition, frequently encountered in various animal species, secondary to abnormal calcium/and Vitamin-D metabolism or chronic renal disease. A carcass of one and half year old, male Labrador dog was brought for post-mortem examination with the history of debility, dyspnoea and bilateral facial swelling. Necropsy examination revealed swollen maxillary bone with cystic cut surface, hard and atrophied kidneys with pale areas on cortical surface, distorted rib cage with rachitic rosary like appearance and enlarged parathyroid glands. Microscopically, severe chronic interstitial nephritis and mineralisation in kidneys, osteolytic changes along with fibrous tissue proliferation in maxillary bone and hyperplastic changes involving the chief cell populations of parathyroid glands were observed. Based on these findings, the present case was diagnosed as a condition of renal osteodystrophia fibrosa with secondary hyperparathyroidism.
