A Khaki Campbell duck of about 40 days age was presented for postmortem with the history of off feeding, drooping and diarrhoea. Necropsy examination revealed subcutaneous haemorrhages, streaks of epicardial haemorrhages, pneumonia, nephritis, enteritis and enlarged spleen. The liver was grossly enlarged; pale with diffuse miliary nodules all over the surface. Leishman staining of heart blood smear revealed typical bipolar organisms suggestive of Pasteurella Spp. For isolation, the heart blood swab was inculcated on blood agar plate followed by incubation at 37°C. Bacterial growth in pure culture on blood agar plate was characterized morphologically and biochemically. Gram -ve coccobacilli organisms were later confirmed by P. multocida species specific PCR using primer pairs KMT1T7 and KMT1SP6. Histopathologically, the lesions included extensive epicardial haemorrhages, acute renal tubular necrosis, catarrhal enteritis and pneumonia. The liver parenchyma revealed tumour cells arranged in acinar pattern separated by scanty connective tissue septa. Patchy areas of tumorous hepatocytes containing fat vacuoles were seen throughout. The histolopathogical features in liver were indicative of hepatocellular carcinoma.
