Abstract

Pigeon paramyxovirus serotype-1 (PPMV-1), a member of avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 (APMV-1), causes mortality in pigeons and poultry. The present study describes the histological, immunohistochemical and molecular characterization of natural infection of PPMV-1 in pigeons. Microscopically, perivascular cuffing, necrosis of neurons in cerebrum and cerebellum, tubulointerstitial nephritis and necrotizing pancreatitis were present. Viral antigen was detected in endothelial cells of brain capillaries, epithelial cells of kidneys, acini of pancreas and hepatocytes of liver by immunohistochemistry. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that all the 4 isolates grouped together and clustered with pigeon paramyxovirus and NDV isolated from pigeons in India.
