Baso-squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is an uncommon epithelilal neoplasm in the animals, which shares the features of both basal and squamous cell carcinoma. Histopathologically, tumour sections revealed multiple islands of neoplastic cells which exhibited both basaloid and squamous differentiation. On immunohistochemistry, neoplastic cells were positive for pancyto-keratin, negative for vimentin indicating their epithelial orgin. The neoplastic cells also revealed immunoreactivity for p53 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen. In conclusion, BSCC is a rare tumour and increased expression of p53 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen in proliferating cells substantiates its potential malignancy and aggressive behaviour. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first report of BSCC in a mare.
