Prevalence of canine neoplastic disorders in and around Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu

Abstract

Tumour is one of the major public health problems in worldwide. In spite of major advances in diagnosis and treatment in the past several decades, tumour remains a major threat for both human and veterinary patients throughout the world. Meager information is available regarding occurrences and types of tumour in canines in different geographical locations. The present study is aimed to know the incidence of commonly occurring neoplasms in canines in and around Namakkal. The study was carried out on dogs presented to Veterinary Clinical Complex, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, Tamil Nadu. Out of 4479 cases, 59 dogs of different age, breed and sex were diagnosed for tumours based on cytological and histological examination. The incidence of tumours in dogs was 1.31%. Among the neoplastic conditions, transmissible venereal tumour (TVT) (42.4%), mammary tumour (18.6%), perianal adenoma (8.5%), osteosarcoma (5.1%), mast cell tumour (3.4%), haemangioma (3.4%), epulis (3.4%), squamous cell carcinoma (3.4%), vaginal fibroma (3.4%), lipoma (1.7%), liposarcoma (1.7%), mesothelioma (1.7%), lymphoma (1.7%) and histiocytoma (1.7%) were noticed. The incidence of tumours were more in non-descript followed by Chippipari in and around Namakkal.
