Abstract

Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma (OPA) and maedi are retroviral diseases of small ruminants caused by jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) and maedi visna virus (MVV), respectively. A case of mixed infection of OPA and maedi in slaughtered sheep is being presented in this paper. The lung tissue samples from the different lobes were collected in 10% neutral buffered formalin for histopathological evaluation and at -20OC for molecular work, respectively. Histopathologically, the lung tissue sections showed presence of proliferated pneumocytes, hyplerplastic BALT, interstitial pneumonia with infiltration of mononuclear cells and smooth muscle hyperplasia in interalveolar septa. PCR assays were found to be positive for both JSRV and MVV nucleic acid suggesting mixed infection of OPA and maedi in sheep.
