Abstract

Cathelicidins are mammalian antibacterial peptide synthesized as precursors by bone marrow cells. In this study RNA from bone marrow of Indian Goat (Capra hircus) was extracted and reverse transcribed followed by amplification using specific primer designed from known Bos taurus and Bubalus bubalis cathelicidin sequences. The amplified 297bp PCR product was cloned and sequenced. The sequence analysis of the cloned goat CATHL cDNA at nucleotide level revealed 89.2, 86.9, 82.8 and 85.9 percent similarity with Bos CATHL7, Bos CATHL5, buffalo CATHL and goat bac7.5 respectively. The deduced amino acid sequence share 81.8% and 73.7% similarity with Bos CATHL 7 and buffalo CATHL. The sequence of goat CATHL showed 37-nucleotide substitution with reported buffalo CATHL mRNA sequence. The amino acid deduced from the nucleotide showed 23 amino acid substitutions with buffalo CATHL.
