Abstract

The study reports purification and characterization of a novel enterocin with broad inhibitory spectrum produced by Enterococcus hirae isolated from fecal matter of swine. This E. hirae produced a bacteriocin with comprehensive antimicrobial activity against the following bacteria; Actinomyceshyovaginalis, Micrococcus species, Haemolytic mycobacterium and Pasteurellamultocida. On the other hand, bacteria such as; Trueperellapyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus suis, Acinetobacterlwoffii, Streptococcus pluranimalium, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Gallibacteriumgenomo spp., Hemolytic Staphylococcus, Neisseria, Aerococcusviridans,Vibriois, and Staptococcuscohnii appeared insensitive to the enterocin. This enterocin was stable between the temperatures ranging from 60°C to 100°C, and at pH 4 to pH 9. This enterocin contained an inhibitory property against many bacteria and expressed more inhibition against in A. hyovaginalis. Hence, this bacteriocin could be used as an alternative antimicrobial agent in treatment against Actinomyces hyovaginalis in animal production.
