The present study was conducted to determine the occurrence of non tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in environmental (soil and water) samples. In all 35 samples consisting of 25 soil and 15 water from different environmental sites were investigated for NTM. 15 isolates conformed biochemically as NTM. 12 NTM isolates were subjected to PCR using allele specific primers. By PCR, 8M. fortuitum from soil and out of 2 waters samples, 1 was M. scrofulaceum and 1 M. fortuitum and two were characterized only biochemically were M. fortuitum. Conventions tests included, colony Morphology, rate of growth, pigmentation, photoreactivity, nitrate Reduction, urease and catalase.
