Endotoxin shock was induced by injecting E coli endotoxin (055:B5LPS) @ 0.85 mg/kg (LD100) in seven anaesthetized buffalo calves. In another group of seven animals, dexamethasone @ 4 mg/kg was administered 20 minutes prior to induction of endotoxin shock No appreciable changes were seen in PCV, Hb and RBC count but progressive and marked leukopaenia and thrombocytopaenia were more consistent features during postendotoxin period. Total plasma proteins, potassium and chloride remained within normal limits. Sodium values decreased insignificantly during postendotoxin period. Blood lactate and pyruvate values showed progressive and significant increase during postendotoxin period. Hypoglycaemia remained a consistent feature throughout the observation period. No protective effect of dexamethasone pretreatment was observed except slight improvement in blood glucose values.
