Abstract

Five per cent powder, chloroform and alcoholic extract ointments of Calendula officinalis and Grewia tenax were evaluated as biological dressing materials for experimental wounds in 27 cow calves. Tissue, hydroxyproline, collagen andelastin increased significantly up to day 28. Maximum increase was recorded in wounds treated with alcoholic extract ointment of C. officinalis, followed by alcoholic extract ointment C. tenax treated wounds. The amount of tissue hexosamine decreased from day 7 to 28 in all the wounds. The rate of decline was faster in the wounds treated with alcoholic extract ointment of C. officinalis followed by similar preparation of G. tenax.
