Abstract

Twenty four healthy adult mongrel bitches were divided randomly into four equal groups (A, B, C and D). The ovaries of the animals of groups A, B and D were exposed following a routine laparotomy operation and cryothermy was applied over the ovaries till they appeared a frozen mass, which took an average of 12.55 minutes per ovary. The animals of group C were laparotomized and ovaries removed but no cryothermy applied (standard untreated). The animals of group D were observed for one year following cryoburning of ovaries, for reproductive behaviour. The postoperative recovery and histopathological examination revealed complete destruction of ovaries and replacement by fibrous tissue in animals of group A. The haematological parameters (Hb, PCV, DLC, TLCand ESR) and biochemical estimates (glucose, total protein, urea, creatinine, SGOTand SGPT), revealed no untoward effect inducedby the cryoburning of ovaries (group B) and ovariectomy (group C). None of the animals of group D exhibited any oestrous behaviour, nor any ovary related disorder till one year after the cryoburning of ovaries.
