Post-operative digestive disorders following rumenotomy and diaphragmatic herniorr-haphy in the cases of diaphragmatic hernia in buffaloes have been investigated furtlter and clinically managed. In these cases abomasal reflux (back flow of abomasal contents), due to caudal abomasal transport failure has been found to be the serious problem which resulted in hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis. It was characterized by rumen fluid chloride concentration >30 mmol/L. In these cases suffering from abomasal reflux plasma chloride deficit were calculated and managed accordingly. Fluid therapy by hypertonic saline 2.7% i.v. (repeated infusions with potassium chloride supplementation) could correct the potassium and chloride deficit depending upon duration and severity of illness, extent of herniation and presence of adhesions.
