Abstract

An attempt was made for diaphragmatic herniorrhaphy and hernioplasty under xylazine sedation (@ 0.10 mg/kg) in 3 non-pregnant buffaloes and 3 cows and detomidine sedation (@ 40 μg/kg i.v.) in 3 pregnant buffaloes and 2 cows combined with local sedation without the use of intermittent positive pressure ventilation. One cow sedated with xylazine died during the surgery. Out of remaining 5 animals sedated with xylazine, one cow with double hernial rings died and post-mortem examination revealed concurrent reticular abscesses and septicaemia. Another buffalo from which foreign bodies were removed developed vagal indigestion. Out of 3 pregnant buffaloes and 2 pregnant cows sedated with detomidine, 1 buffalo aborted, developed metritis and incisional hernia, which were managed successfully. The present investigation revealed that the surgery for diaphragmatic hernial repair could be managed without ventilator if the hernial ring was in the hemi- diaphragm, provided the intraoperative complications were well managed.
