Cryosurgery is used to treat a variety of cancerous diseases in dogs, horses and cats (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib002">Krahwinkel <italic>et al</italic>., 1976</xref>). This paper describes successful treatment of a squamous cell carcinoma at the left hind limb of a Manipur deer.A Manipuri deer of Nandan Kanan Zoo aged about 3 yr developed a wound at the left groin region of left hind limb. It had been treated with local dressing using povidone-iodine and a course of Dicrysticin-S 10 lac IU b.i.d. for 7 days. The lesion gradually developed to a growth of about 1 cm diameter showing no tendency to heal. A biopsy of the growth revealed it to be a squamous cell carcinoma showing keratinization with epithelial pearls. It was decided to treat the growth by cryotherapy.The deer was restrained physically. A long stainless steel rod was dipped in liquid nitrogen till the boiling noise of the liquid nitrogen stopped. Immediately, it was applied to the growth, which stuck firmly to it with ice formation, and was left there until thawing occurred to separate them. Cryoapplication was done for 2 freezethaw cycles of 2 min each within a period of 5 min. After 2 weeks, the growth showed a significant reduction in size to about 0.25 cm in diameter. Biopsy of the remaining tissue was taken to assess the outcome of the treatment. A second application of liquid nitrogen swab was done as per the previous application. It was advised to treat the wound with povidone-iodine ointment till it heated up completely. Examination of the animal after one month showed an uneventful recovery.The Manipuri deer being a rare species and very docile in nature, the physical restraint was done for cryotherapy to avoid any unwanted complications of chemical restraints. In the present case the stainless steel rod immersed in liquid nitrogen was successfully used for probe method of freezing target tissues as done by Venkataswamy and Ramakrishna (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib004">1990</xref>) for cryosurgical treatment of bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma. Due to bactericidal effect of cryotherapy as expressed by Lane (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib003">1974</xref>) and Farris <italic>et al</italic>. (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="bib001">1975</xref>) no local or systemic antibiotic was given till 14th day. However, after 14 days, povidone-iodine 5% ointment was applied till complete healing occurred to avoid possible secondary infections. This step had been taken in view of the suppurative changes observed microscopically in the second biopsy sample, although the signs of infection not observed grossly. The wound healed in about a month.</sec></body><back><ref-list><title>References
