Abstract

The study was conducted on 8 clinical cases of dogs suffering with acute abdomen due to lodgement of foreign bodies. Besides this a group (control) of 8 dogs was also included in this study to know the normal level of various parameters. The diagnosis was made on the basis of clinical and radiographic examination and ultrasonography. Various clinicophysiological, haematobiochemical and cardiopulmonary parameters were studied. Radiography showed radio-opaque material in the stomach along with clinical signs viz. abdominal tenderness, altered appetite and various degrees of dehydration. Ultrasonography revealed a round hypo-to anechoic structure with another small anechoic circle within it indicating foreign bodies. No marked difference was observed in T wave, Q-T interval and S-T segment. The values of heart rate, respiration rate, haemoglobin, packed cell volume, total erythrocyte count, total leucocyte count, neutrophil, total protein, albumin, glucose, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, alanine amino transferase, aspartate amino transferase and gamma glutamyl transferase were significantly higher alongwith a lower level of cardiac out put, respiratory minute volume, lymphocytes, sodium, potassium, chloride and calcium in all dogs with obstruction due to lodgement of foreign bodies, as compared to healthy animals.
