The study was conducted in hilly district of Dehradun in the state of Uttaranchal over a period of 7 months from June 2005 to January 2006. A total of 21 stray dogs suffering with transmissible venereal tumour (17 females and 4 males) were treated with vincristine sulphate (Cytocrystin) @ 0.025 mg/kg body weight. Three shots of injections were given intravenously at weekly interval. The response to treatment was evaluated on the basis of improvement in clinical signs and regression of the tumour mass. In all the cases cessation of bleeding was observed after first injection alongwith a change in colour of tumourous mass from pink to dark brown. All the cases completely recovered after 3 doses of cytocrystin injection. During the course of treatment two cases showed toxic signs like anorexia, vomition, dullness and high rise of temperature, which responded well to symptomatic treatment with metachlopromide, paracetamol and liver extract injections as per the standard dosage regimen. Observations revealed that vincristine @ 0.025 mg/kg body wt injected intravenously at weekly interval for 3 consecutive weeks cure transmissible venereal tumour in dogs. However, some toxic symptoms may appear in few animals during the course of treatment, which can be treated symptomatically.
