Abstract

Eight dogs suffering from gingival tumours/epulis (epulides) were treated by excision using surgical diathermy unit. The age of the dogs ranged from 1½ year to 7 years. Histopathological examination of the excisional biopsy specimens revealed periodontal fibromatous epulis in 5 dogs, a benign adnexal tumour with features suggestive of poroma, a focal fibrous hyperplasia, and a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma in one dog each. It was concluded that epulis is a clinically descriptive term and the real nature of these lesions should be determined histopathologically.
