Abstract

A clinical study employing interlocking nail (ILN) fixation for the treatment of femoral shaft fracture with the use of image intensifier (C-arm) was done in 6 dogs. After preoperative radiography, 7 mm (1 dog) and 6 mm (5 dogs) interlocking nails anchored to a half jig were interlocked with 3.5 mm screws. Closed method of insertion of ILN was used. Out of 6 cases treated for femoral shaft fractures, 5 cases showed excellent bone healing. An early return of limb function and weight bearing were notable features following interlocking nailing and hence it is well suited for stabilization of femoral shaft fracture in dogs.
