Abstract

Study was conducted on 10 normal buffaloes between 5–8 years of age. The blood for serum and synovial fluid samples from carpal joint were analyzed to compare biochemical constituents of these fluids under normal conditions. Analysis of the samples revealed good mucin precipitate quality in synovial fluid, whereas glucose concentration of synovia was observed similar to that of serum. Total protein and albumin were recorded higher in serum, however, the concentration of albumin in respect to globulin was observed higher in synovial fluid resulting in higher albumin-globulin ratio in synovial fluid as compared to serum. Concentration of aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase was less in synovial fluid as compared to serum. Study of these biochemical constituents in synovia could be a good indicator for the diagnosis of joint diseases in animals.
