Abstract

Eighty clinical cases of intestinal disorders in ruminants (cattle and goats) were managed by surgical treatment. Eight cases were having intussusception, two had caecal dilation and torsion. Sixty cases had atresia ani, five had atresia ani-et-recti and related congenital abnormalities and five had recto-vaginal fistulas. Intestinal obstruction was found as a problem exclusively in bullocks, whereas atresia-ani was found as a problem in cow calves and kids. None of the buffaloes had intestinal obstruction or atresia ani. All the animals were treated by surgical methods. Four out of eight intussusception cases recovered, one out of two caecal dilation and torsion recovered and all the cases of atresia-ani and rectovaginal fistulas showed recoveries. Intestinal obstruction has got poor prognosis due to late presentation of cases, adhesions, dehydration and acid-base imbalance. Though atresia-ani cases showed 100% recovery, the cases with atresia ani-et-recti with very short colon could not survive due to difficulties in surgical approach and colostomy. Detailed clinical signs and techniques are presented.
