Abstract

Six clinical cases with Colles fracture in dogs were considered for the evaluation of Ilizarov ring fixation method. Cases were operated under general anaesthesia using halothane and oxygen mixture. Clinical parameters and physical rehabilitation and radiographic signs of fracture healing were considered for assessment of fracture healing. Consistent results were obtained with Ilizarov technique because of good anatomic reduction, axial stiffness of the fractured fragments, joint mobility, functional weight bearing and it prevented muscle atrophy there by proving superior to plaster of Paris cast application. Among the six cases, four healed by primary cortical union and remaining two healed by secondary union. Complications like mild to moderate periosteal reactions, loosening of nuts and bolts of implants, bending of K-wires were encountered during the observation period.
